Our Commitment to the Queer Community

QHP understands that the queer community has a diverse experiences and perspectives. We aim to ensure that the community is represented from production to output. We aim to share our power and privilege as licensed health care professionals to increase the autonomy of sexual and gender minorities in living their healthiest and most meaningful lives.

How will QHP hold ourselves to actualizing these values?

  1. Each episode will feature a community member’s experiences and questions.

Community member means someone who identifies as a sexual or gender minority and does not identify as an academic or clinical expert on the topic being discussed.

  2. We recognize that lived experiences are a valid and authentic form of expertise.

  3. We will seek out expert voices who have had a positive impact on the community that they work for, and whose professional work goals are aligned with the goals of the community. This “positive impact” can manifest in a number of settings: in health care, as an advocate, or as a researcher who produces scholarship.

  4. Include a community member (the community voice or another person) as an off-air editor of the final podcast script

  5. Ask our community advisory board and our listeners for frequent feedback

 Why make this commitment?

The queer community is a collection a communities. Our power-sharing mission depends on creating a platform for community members to share their health experience in conversation with healthcare professionals. Misunderstanding and discrimination challenge the relationship between queer communities and health care providers. Through story telling and knowledge sharing, we want to provide individuals the tools to live their healthiest lives.

We also understand that we (Richard, Sam and Gaby - the hosts) do not represent all of the experiences and identities within the queer community. In fact, as cisgender white indiviudals, we acknowledge the benefits to our experiences that have come out of marginalized communities.

For these reasons, we will actively strive to champion, amplify and include the voices that are missing. Read our diversity, equity, and inclusion framework to see our approach and rubric for accountability.

We’ve put thought into this and we will continue to do so.

For us, community commitment is an iterative process.
